[email protected]It is a private add-on to your German health insurance that covers treatment beyond the basic benefits of the statutory health insurance – for example high-quality dentures, implants, ceramic fillings, professional teeth cleaning and orthodontics. Depending on the plan, up to 100 % of the costs are reimbursed.
For dentures, German statutory health insurance only pays a fixed subsidy (Festzuschuss) – usually around 60–75 % of the standard treatment. With implants or ceramic crowns, you can easily be left with several thousand euros to pay yourself. Supplementary dental insurance closes this gap.
That depends on the plan. Typical areas are dentures (crowns, bridges, implants, prostheses), dental treatment (fillings, root canal treatment), professional cleaning and prevention, and orthodontics. Premium plans reimburse up to 100 % in all areas.
The younger you are when you take out a policy, the lower the monthly premium. It is worth considering as a young adult, but also at 50+, when expensive dentures become more common.
Many plans have a waiting period of 3 to 8 months before you can claim benefits. Treatment during this time is not reimbursed. There are also plans without a waiting period – particularly interesting if treatment is already foreseeable.
Premiums depend on your age, the plan and the level of cover. Young adults get good cover from around €5–15 per month. Comprehensive premium plans cost around €20–50 per month, depending on age.
